Ebbene, come potete leggere in questa pagina dal sito Virgo, i due terminali (quello a ovest e quello a nord) contengono degli specchi che riflettono il fascio laser usato per rilevare le onde gravitazionali.

Per ridurre il rumore proveniente da un’infinita quantità di fattori questi specchi sono sospesi nel vuoto mediante dei pendoli a cascata alti fino a 10 metri…

Someone of you may have wondered what it had to do with me a picture with a circular mirror together with the west terminal of Virgo in the background.

Well, as you can read on this page from the Virgo website, the two terminals (the one to the west and the one to the north) contain mirrors that reflect the laser beam used to detect gravitational waves.

To reduce the noise coming from an infinite amount of factors, these mirrors are suspended in a vacuum by means of cascading pendulums up to 10 meters high...
