LUCA SERASINI | PROGETTO COSTELLAZIONI 

The idea of this installation was born from a guided tour of the VIRGO interferometer in the Municipality of Cascina, one of the four antennas in the world (2 are in the USA, 1 newly built is in Japan) made for the detection of gravitational waves from the universe. Inside a cultivated field near the west arm of the interferometer Luca Serasini will "draw" the interference fringes as they are produced by the antenna demonstration model, in dimensions varying between 8 and 18 feet in length. It will be, as in the wake of the other land art made by Serasini during almost 10 years of his Progetto Costellazioni an intimate installation, to be visited in silence, alone, where the visitor can wonder about the immensity of the universe, the intensity of its presence and the flow-waves that this brings us. Through an app that can be downloaded on smartphones and only working near the installation, visitors will be immersed in a soundscape created specifically by Massimo Magrini that will be controlled by the location and movement of the visitor within the installation space, in order to make the presence in the site interactive also from a sound point of view. Sound materials will be constructed starting only from the sounds of the interferometer: that is, both from the "template" signals (models of those that are attempted to be picked up with the interferometer), and from those actually detected in recent years and corresponding to events that occurred in remote regions of the universe. The recording of some vital signals, and the display of some cardiac functional parameters will provide information on the subjective, emotional response of artists during the artistic performance. Moreover, some "cardiac" sounds may be recorded by echocardiography that will further strengthen the emotional component of the artists.

 

Phase #01/CAMPIONAMENTI 

During the month of June 2021 the two artists have conducted a campaign of experimentation on the geometric shapes to be drawn, on the materials and methods to be adopted and on many other fields of intervention that made this first phase a real multidisciplinary "field of action" also of a performative nature. Below are some ideas that had tested in the field:

• experimentation of different way of grass cutting for the figure of fringes;

• creation of drawings, photocollages, crayons and drycuts on the land art project;

• creation of a set of B/W analogic photographs printed in limited edition on some poetic aspects of the installation;

 

Phase #02/RIFLESSIONI 

Between the middle of September till October 2021 the two artists will conduct another "campaign of experimentation" to test other new idea came from the first phase and some old one that wasn't possibile to test before. These are some ideas that had tested in the field:

• experimentation of different materials for the figure of fringes: TNT, flexible mirrors;

• continue the creation of drawings, photocollages, crayons and drycuts on the land art project;

• continue the creation of a set of B/W analogic photographs printed in limited edition on some poetic aspects of the installation;

• acquisition of biometric, electrophysiological (EEG, ECG, breath) and echocardiographic data during a typical working day with continuous photographic documentation for subsequent processing and possible exposure;

• creation of narravite story usind tha Phyton syntax programming language (in collaboration with VIRGO);

• creation of first samples of sounds (in collaboration with VIRGO).

  

DOCUMENTATION AND PROMOTION VIA SOCIAL MEDIA

In June, all phases and moments of work, thought, doubts, the materials used and the artistic artworks produced will be documented in photographic and video form (also with the use of drones) and promoted through the artists' Instagram and Facebook channels and through a blog created for the occasion. Visitors will be free to come to the place chosen for the experimentation of land art to observe and discuss the various phases of work.

 

THE PROGETTO COSTELLAZIONI

project This project born in 2013 with land art installations in the uncultivated fields and on the hills, starts from the question of whether we still need the stars nowadays. As of 2019 there are 6 land arts made: “Costellazione Toro” for the 4th edition of the M'Arte Biennale in Montegemoli (2013), “Orione, il grande cacciatore” for the artist's residence MateriaPrima in Ceppaiano (2015), “Alcor & Mizar” for Art in the Woods in Holmfirth in England and “Pegaso, 10 storie per 10 stelle” for M'arte Personale 2016 – interactive land art in Montegemoli (2016), “Come Iadi tra le Pleiadi”, interactive land art for the XIV edition of Accenni di contemporaneo in Civitella D'Agliano (2017) and “Les ètoiles binaires” for the artist's residence in Ifitry, Morocco (2018). In some of these installations Luca Serasini has added interactive systems that dialogue with visitors based on old phones. Also for this project he has created 3 site-specific installations: “Große Wagen” at the JUL center in Weimar (2017), “Costellazioni Larderello/light art”, projection on 4 geothermal cooling towers 70 meters high each in Larderello (PI) in collaboration with ENEL Green Power (2018-2019) and “Le storie di San Nicola”, a permanent light installation for "chiassi a fil di luce" in Peccioli (2019).

ARTISTS-1/Luca Serasini

He was born in Pisa in 1971. Since 1990 he has been working at the Cnr Institute of Clinical Physiology where he began to deal with electronics in the cardiology sector (1990-1995) joining from 1996 to today the Multimedia Group that supports the research and teaching activities of IFC researchers and where he was able to learn the use of video cameras, image processing and video editing software, such as wiring networks and audio-video equipment, in addition to the organization of residential courses and congresses. He began painting as a self-taught in 1996 and since 2003 has started to use several other techniques, from photography to videos and video installations up to land art in 2013, and thanks to her electronics studios, to create light boxes and interactive devices.

 

ARTISTS-2/Massimo Magrini

Massimo Magrini carries out research activities within the Institute of Information Science and Technology of the National Research Council, where he deals with signal processing and interactive multimedia systems for artistic and rehabilitation applications. Active for many years also as an electronic musician, with the project Bad Sector he has made dozens of albums and has performed live in Europe, Russia, Australia. Since 2017 he teaches Interaction Design at the Alma Artis Academy of Fine Arts.

 

SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATIONS

Alessandro Pingitore

In 1991, graduated in Medicine and Surgery; in 1997 PhD in Cardiovascular Physiopathology; in 2002 he specialized in Cardiology. In 2011, Visiting Professor at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Current position: First CNR Researcher at the Institute of Clinical Physiology, Pisa. Its main fields of scientific interest: 1) non-invasive cardiovascular imaging; 2) thyroid heart relationship; 3) mechanisms of physiological adaptation to intense exercise; 4) cardiovascular prevention. Author of 170 scientific papers, co-author of 4 books. Bibliometric indicators: HI 37, citations number 5702 (SCOPUS). In the artistic field, he collaborated with the artist Yuri Kalendarev, of whom he was curator of the personal exhibition at the Barbarian Art Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland, in 2011, and contributed to the conceptual development of the Sound Sculpture project.
